Homework for 3/5

Homework:

Read Candide. It is long but you WILL like it. Answer the following:

Starter Question for Candide

Candide is a black comedy with a biting point about the world we live in. Voltaire uses hyperbole—the overstating or exaggeration of events and speech to make his philosophic point.

Examine a character or a specific scene to show how the grisly, cruel and anything-but-perfect world we live in is exposed through Voltaire’s outrageous use of hyperbole. Consider the pain, torture, multiple miseries and deaths characters experience. Examine the language used. The entire work seems to exaggerate nearly everything.

Your examination should be 1 to 1 ½ pages in length. Please double space and type as usual.

Lets just say that i interupted a lunch meeting today because i busted up laughing reading the begining of this, Candid got kicked in the back, for letting his hands explore.

So whats up with Eldorado, whats the purpose of this section in the novel, its like Voltair tries to give us something not so gory but turns it around and everythign that comes from Eldorado causes Candide more harm, also, have you noticed Candide is an idiot, he gets walked over the whole time. He has no street smarts. Martin is the only character that i think has any outlook on life.

ok, I'm kind of confused, is Cacambo younger than Candide? From the way it was described it seems that he's younger, but later it seems like he's older because of his experience and knowledge.

You know, i think its hard to say, from what the author gives us i feel that Candide had an easy life growing up so he really has no common sense or street smarts, so to me everyone seems older, because they have life experiences and know how to survive in the world which they live.

Troy I totally agree with you about Candide he is so idiotic and seems to think that its okay to just do his own thing without understanding his surroundinds ( he has no street smarts at all). I also agree with you about Martin, he does have a larger outlook on life and what it is to live. While the other characters seem to be oblivious to what life is or would be like in the big picture.

so far from what ive read, i think that it is sort of funny and sad at the same time that when candid seems to get his feet back on the ground, someone swipes his legs back out from under him...like when he gets kicked out of the house for feeling up the girl, he seems to catch a break with the 2 guys at the bar, but then they just turn and stab him in the back after they help him out

yeah, but you'd think he'd learn!!! I mean seriously how many times can he get screwed over and how badly it is...I definately see the over exaggeration Prof Will was talking about!
